On the morning of Friday, August 28th, citizens of our community will walk in solidarity down the Route 1 corridor from the East-West Highway to the D.C. border to express support for the goals of The Commitment March, the 57th Anniversary of the March on Washington.
Walkers can walk for one block or all the way down to the National Mall, advocating for police reform, voter registration & participation, and an accurate census. The event, called the "Pathway to Unity," is supported by a collaboration between the residents of Brentwood, College Park, Hyattsville, North Brentwood, Mt. Rainier, Riverdale, and University Park. Local government representatives and advocacy organizations will have tables along the route with information on voting, the census, food distribution, and more. The region’s rich artistic community will also take part; local musicians and artists will be positioned to perform for marchers as they pass by.
The activated Route 1 pathway will begin at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville and extend all the way to the D.C. border at Rhode Island and Eastern Avenue, a distance of approximately 2.3 miles. Those who would like to march this route are encouraged to gather at DeMatha at 7:00am; the march will leave the location at 8:00am.
All participants must wear masks.
